Named for Alexander C. Hirtz, noted orchidologist of Quito, who collected this species.

Additional Information:  Apparently endemic in northwestern Ecuador at altitudes of 4,600 feet (1,400 m) to 10,500 feet (3,200 m).

The surface of the sepals is papillose, covered with "glands."
