Stelis (STEE-liss) is one of the larger genera with perhaps 500 species distributed throughout tropical America. Although vegetatively the species show much variety, the flowers surprisingly are very similar. Each has three sepals about equally triangular with a small central structure made up of the column, small petals and small lip. Some species have flowers that close during periods of lower humidity. The name refers to the appearance of the epiphytic plant, which means "a kind of mistletoe" in Greek. These plants have not yet been positively identified.
