Regalia (reh-GAH-lee-ah) is characterized usually by a large habit with stout ramicauls and thickly coriaceous leaves. The peduncle produces in slow succession a raceme of large, fleshy, rigid, long-lasting flowers with long tails (except for one species without tails). The petals are thick, cartilage-like, paddle-shaped and truncate. The lip is oblong and thick with a pair of concave areas at the base. The species of this genus were formerly in Masdevallia section Durae. The genus appears to be allied to the single-flowered Byrsella.
