From the Greek stenostachys, "a narrow spike", referring to a slender part of the inflorescence.

Additional Information:  Variable species widely distributed from Mexico into Ecuador at altitudes of 160 feet (50 m) to 9,180 feet (2,800 m).

The yellow flower with the red lip is typical of P. stenostachya from Costa Rica.
