Named for the community of Amac, Alta Verapaz, Guatemala, where the species was first collected.

Additional Information:  Occurs locally in moist forests, uncommonly in Central America but frequently on the southeastern slopes of the Andes of Ecuador at altitudes of 2,790 feet (850 m) to 8,200 feet (2,500 m).
