Megema (may-GHE-mah) is characterized by large, caespitose plants with loose, overlapping sheaths about the stout ramicauls with thickly coriaceous leaves.  A single, large, durable flower is partially engulfed by a large floral bract that hides the rough ovary.  The sepals are semi-connected in to a rigid cup or tube.  The tips of the thick petals are rough or twisted.  The lip is divided by marginal folds.  One overlooked species, M. macrura, had been hiding in Masdevallia section Coriaceae.  The remainder of these species used to reside in Masdevallia subspecies Cucullatia.
