Named in honor of Adolphe Tonduz of the l'Institut Phytogeographique de Costa Rica who discovered this species.

Additional Information: Inhabits the warm, moist, tropical forests of the eastern lowland regions of Costa Rica and adjacent Panama at altitudes of 980 feet (300 m) to 2,460 feet (750 m). M. tonduzii grows well and flowers profusely in warm cultivation. In most cases a second flower is produced sequentially. This trait is sometimes passed on in hybridizing.
