From the Greek stenorhynchos, "a narrow snout", referring to the narrower tail of the dorsal sepal as compared to that of M. elephanticeps.

Additional Information:  Infrequent and apparently endemic in the northern part of the Western Cordillera of Colombia at altitudes of around 6,560 feet (2,000 m).
