From the Latin roseus, "rose-colored", referring to the color of the flowers.

Additional Information:  Locally abundant on the eastern slopes of the Andes from southern Colombia to southern Ecuador at altitudes of 7,200 feet (2,200 m) to 10,500 (3,200 m).

Some clones have more intense striping in the lateral sepals.
