From the Latin ova avis, "eggs of a bird", in allusion to the appearance of the crowded inflorescence of speckled, ovoid flowers.

Additional Information:  Grows epiphytically in the dense clouds forests, as well as on the steep road embankments on the western slopes of Pichincha in western Ecuador at altitudes of around 6,500 feet (2,000 m).
