Named for Molossus, a genus of small bats, referring to the grotesque appearance of the flower with its gaping orifice.

Additional Information: Widespread and locally abundant in the Western and Central Cordilleras of Colombia at altitudes of 5,250 feet (1,600 m) to 7,120 feet (2,170 m). Sometimes many dozens, if not hundreds of plants are found literally covering the trucks of small trees and thick vines.
