Named in honor of Don Alvarao Mejia of Mekellin, Colombia, in whose orchid collection this species was discovered.

Additional Information:  From the Western Cordillera of Colombia on the high branches of large trees exposed to considerable sunlight at altitudes of 2,620 feet (800 m) to 3,280 feet (1,000 m).
