Named in honor of Thomas Hoijer of the Botanical Garden of Stockholm, Sweden, who with Stig Dalstrom first discovered this species.

Additional Information:  Locally but widely distributed from central Colombia to southern Ecuador at altitudes of 4,920 feet (1,500 m) to 8,530 (2,600 m).
