From the Latin fractiflexus, "Flexuous, or zig-zag", erroneously applied to the abruptly reflexed tails of the sepals.

Additional Information:  Locally abundant in the cloud forest of one rich valley of the eastern declivity of the Andes east of Loja in Ecuador at altitudes ranging from 5,250 feet (1,600 m) to 5,900 feet (1,800 m).
