Additional Information:  Widely distributed in the Eastern Cordillera of Colombia where it remains locally abundant at altitudes ranging from 8,200 feet (2,500 m) to 11,800 feet (3,600 m).

For those of you who bloom M. coccinea with curly caudae or sepals like the photo on the right, this usually occurs when the blooms open in warmer weather.  The same plant will most likely bloom much nicer if cooler.
