Masdevallia ampullacea  Luer & Andreetta

From the Latin ampullaceus, "like a flask or a bottle", referring to the shape of the sepaline tube.

Award:  CCM/AOS of 84 points (on 01161 on right) given on 11-16-2002 at the Great Lakes Judging Center

 

Additional Information:  Occurs occasionally in the wet forests of southeastern Ecuador at altitudes ranging from 2,300 feet (700 m) to 4,920 feet (1,500 m).

Interesting observation - notice that on one blooming, 01161 had curly caudae, an a subsequent blooming, the caudae were straight when they first opened, then curled as they aged.
