Named in honor of Alexander C. Hirtz of Quito, Ecuador, co-discoverer of this species.

Additional Information:  Infrequent and apparently endemic to a small area of cloud forest on the western declivity of central Ecuador at altitudes ranging from 6,560 feet (2,000 m) to 7,210 feet (2,200 m).
