Additional Information: This subspecies is locally abundant in moist forested slopes in Ecuador, distant from any known population of the typical subspecies which is found growing terrestrially. This subspecies differes from the typical species by bearing usually only a single, red flower instead of a simultaneious few-flowered raceme of orange flowers. Altitudes are from 6,560 feet (2,000 m) to 8,200 feet (2,500 m).
