Named in honor of Ing. Alexander Hirtz of Quito, Ecuador who discovered this as well as numerous other new species of orchids.

Additional Information:  Found in the cloud forests of Ecuador from 5,200 feet (1,600 m) to 6,500 feet (2,000 m).  Bottom right photos show the xanthinic form.
