The genus Draconanthes (drak-oh-NAN-theez) was created in 1996 by Dr. Carlyle Luer.  The two species were previously known as Lepanthes.  From the Greek for "dragon flower", these have rigid, fleshy sepals and fleshy petals with a thick lip and are borne on successively flowered racemes.  One species is endemic to Ecuador, the other is found through the Andes at high elevations.
