From the Latin erinaceus, "the European hedgehog", in allusion to the spiny exterior of the flower.

Additional Information:  Found relatively infrequent in the humid forests from Costa Rica and Panama and into adjacent western Colombia with one disjunct area as far south as southwestern Ecuador at altitudes of 2,130 feet (650 m) to 6,560 feet (2,000 m).
