The genus Andinia (ann-DIHN-ee-uh) is a new genus consisting of two species that used to belong to the genus Salpistele because of a similarity of the column.  They differ, however, from the Central American species of Salpistele in the creeping habit, the echinate (prickly) ovary and several floral features.  DNA studies revealed no relationship to the Central American species of Salpistele.
