From the Latin grandiflorus, "large-flowered," referring to the size of the flower.

Additional Information:  Relatively frequent in the mountainous forests of Ecuador and all three cordilleras of Colombia at altitudes of around 5,250 feet (1,600 m) to 11,550 feet (3,400 m).
