From the Latin minutus, "very small", referring to the habit of the plant.

Additional Information:  Widely distributed in the forests of the eastern lowlands of the mountainous South America from the Guianas to Bolivia but to date has not been recorded from Brazil, Colombia or Ecuador at altitudes of 360 feet (110 m) to 4,260 feet (1,300 m).
