The genus Acianthera (ah-see-AN-thur-uh) is a new genus consisting of species that for the most part used to belong to the genus Pleurothallis, subgenus Acianthera. Not all of the species published in Icones Pleurothallidinarum volume 26 were moved here and some species that were not included in volume 26 now appear here. It was indicated that the species of Brazil are not yet included. The elevation of this subgenus to the genus level came about because of DNA sequencing.
